Friends of St. Mary's
The Parish Church of St. Mary’s, Woodham Ferrers is a Grade 1* listed building. With the increasing cost of repairing and maintaining it a “Friends of St. Mary’s” scheme has been founded. This scheme will enable a wider group of people to help share the burden and preserve its fabric for future generations. A building to be enjoyed for its beauty, appreciated for its architecture and understood for its history.
The membership of this group comes from the wider community as well as including members of the church congregation. “Friends of St. Mary’s” give their support financially through subscription and donations and may also give their time and skills where possible. “Friends” may be local residents, people living elsewhere with local connections or people who have visited the church and wish to support it in the future.
“Friends of St. Mary’s” is officially launched on June 24th 2017 during a weekend of “the Celebration of Marriage” at St. Mary’s Church. A programme of fund raising events is planned commencing with a concert on July 15th at St. Mary’s Church.
The “Friends” short term goal is to gain a membership base and raise funds for the church tower project and a major lighting upgrade. Our long term goals will include the restoration of the “Sandy’s monument” and the George III coat of arms and the cleaning of the Charity Board.
As well as organising fund raising events, “Friends of St. Mary’s” plan to host more visits from walking, cycling, historical or other interested groups. The history guide is currently been updated and a handout for walking groups with routes to and from St. Mary’s is being compiled.
“Friends of St. Mary’s” will receive regular electronic updates of events and news from St. Mary’s. The “Friends” or F.O.S.M committee is a sub-committee of the Parochial Church Council and keeps the PCC regularly updated.
